Hollywood Photograph

Back in the 80s, Halloween in the gay Mecca of West Hollywood, California was a much different affair than the exploitive, commercial extravaganza it has become in the past decade. The main drag, Santa Monica Boulevard, was not closed to traffic as it is now. Unlike today, there was no radio or TV coverage, very few tourists and even fewer straights. It had neither the blessing of the city fathers or the West Hollywood Sheriff. Quite the contrary. Traffic was jammed to a standstill as drag queens hoped into the cab of the astonished driver of a Safeway 18 wheeler or the back seat of a stranded motorist with a flashy car. Everyday people stuck in traffic trying to get to their destinations not believing their eyes at the mayhem unfolding around them. Ugly drag queens flitted about and all but naked men darting in and out of traffic stopping only long enough to press their butt cheeks against car windows. The smell of marijuana was everywhere and crowds of gays in the most amazing costumes running this way and that trying to stay one step ahead of the deputy Sheriffs who were definitely not looking the other way. Over 200 color photos on CD that capture the spirit of the times. Hilarious in themselves, the amazing costumes are also a great inspiration for Halloween ideas.
